My Style Icons

25th April 2012

Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era, and putting together this list of my favorite style icons only furthered that feeling.  These ladies exude everything that style means to me and make me feel inspired over and over again.  Who or what inspires you?

Audrey Hepburn’s style was largely influenced by Givenchy, to whom she was introduced when he designed her dresses for Sabrina in 1954. She admitted that Givenchy “gave me a look, a kind, a silhouette.”  I think she was being a bit modest, as sometimes it is indeed the woman who makes the clothes.  Givenchy went on to create her outfits for numerous films, including one of my favorites, Charade.  Her clothes in that movie are simply amazing.  Here she is in a scene from it, above.

Jackie O is regarded as one of the most influential fashion icons of all time.  During her husband’s presidency, she donned a-line dresses, above-the-elbow gloves and pillbox hats; a look that was soon to be known as “The Jackie.”  While I love this polished look, it is her style after the White House that really inspires me.  Bright colors, big sunglasses and silk scarves.  Much more my speed.

Twiggy’s style is not a thing of the past.  She made mod cool in the mid 60s and we are still dressing like her today.  Plus, how amazing is that haircut?

Probably my favorite of them all, is Katharine Hepburn.  Often described as “headstrong” and “independent,” Katharine changed style for women as we know it.  She went against social norms by donning men’s trousers and over-sized shirts, and man did she make rebellion look good!  I have her to thank for all of my over sized tops and blazers!
